While IELTS Academic traditionally requires test-takers to visit a physical testing center, it responded to changing times with the introduction of the IELTS Indicator, an online version of the test, ensuring candidates can take the test from the comfort of their homes when test centers are closed. This lighter version of the IELTS is not accepted for immigration though.
Test Design Differences
The Duolingo English Test lasts around an hour and is comprised of a series of quick-paced activities designed to evaluate English proficiency. What makes it particularly unique among language tests is its lack of a separate speaking section.
In contrast, the IELTS Academic test offers a comprehensive examination of English skills. It includes four distinct sections—listening, reading, writing, and speaking which are conducted over 2 hours and 45 minutes. Its speaking test involves a one-on-one conversation with a certified examiner, offering a more personalized and accurate assessment of the individual’s speaking skills.
Why the IELTS is More Popular
While both the IELTS Academic and Duolingo English Test offer robust ways to measure English proficiency, the IELTS Academic provides a more comprehensive and globally recognized assessment. The convenience and flexibility of the Duolingo English Test are undoubtedly appealing, but IELTS’s more extensive testing, multiple versions, broader recognition, and face-to-face speaking test make it the more suitable choice for individuals seeking to demonstrate their English proficiency to the widest possible audience.
