IELTS Weekly Practice: PNE-Themed Cue Cards

The Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) is a beloved annual event in British Columbia, attracting visitors with its lively atmosphere, thrilling rides, delicious food, and diverse entertainment. While the PNE is all about fun and excitement, it also offers a unique opportunity to practice your English speaking skills, especially if you’re preparing for the IELTS exam.

This week, we’ve created a series of IELTS-style cue cards inspired by the PNE to help you explore how to answer questions in a holistic and engaging way. These questions won’t appear on the actual IELTS test, but they’re designed to inspire you to think critically, express yourself clearly, and develop the kind of fluency and coherence needed to excel in the speaking section of the exam.

I recently attended a family reunion in Vancouver, where relatives from all across Canada gathered. The event took place at Stanley Park, one of the most iconic spots in the city, during a beautiful summer weekend. It was a joy to see everyone, from grandparents to little cousins, sharing stories and enjoying a picnic together. The sense of togetherness, combined with the stunning views of the ocean and mountains, made this event truly unforgettable. The reunion reminded me of the importance of family bonds and how they help shape our identity.

At the PNE, I couldn’t resist trying the famous mini donuts, which are a staple of the fair. They were warm, sweet, and coated with cinnamon sugar—absolutely delicious. I also sampled some poutine, a classic Canadian dish made of fries topped with cheese curds and gravy. The combination of flavors was rich and satisfying. These foods were not only tasty but also gave me a sense of nostalgia, reminding me of past visits to the fair. I would definitely recommend trying them to anyone visiting the PNE.

At the PNE, I tried my luck at a ring toss game, which is one of the many carnival games available. The goal was to toss rings onto bottles to win a prize. It was more challenging than it looked, and although I didn’t win a big prize, I did manage to win a small stuffed animal. The game was a lot of fun and added an element of excitement to the day.
